First post.
Let me first say that this isn't
a "which class is better" post - I know that every class can beat every class, blah blah blah. Second, I apologize if this gets too long. If you have no attention span, you probably won't give a helpful response anyway. Lastly - and more importantly - I hope this doesn't turn into a flame war between the various classes. I will be cross-posting this to the ROGUE, HUNTER, and MAGE forums, for reasons that you'll see below.
BACKGROUND: My main toon is a 49
Orc Shaman and I'm delighted with my choice to initially roll Shaman. I understand my role in groups, I like the enhancement spec, and I'm currently in the guild Heroes of Onyxia (server Onyxia). If I need to re-spec into resto to be more useful for my guild, then I have no problem doing that in the 70 endgame.
ALTS: My main's alt bank / auctioneer is Viser (see my signature). I leveled this warrior to 10 to check out that class (yuck), and he's now camped at Org, taking care of Esqwire's business. Let's
say that I know I never want to create and level a Warrior.
The second alt I created was Morphene, currently a lvl 10 undead priest laying naked somewhere in the streets of Brill. I am intrigued by the idea of a bad@ss shadow priest, but I don't know if I can level a priest to 70. I like running instances, and I already know I don't want to be a healbot. I MAY grind with this priest (to lvl) but most likely not.
The next alt was Aeq, an undead mage I only
leveled to 4 or 5, mostly because I got caught up powerleveling with in his mid 30's. I never went back, but I recall liking how quickly I was wasting the Rattlecages in Brill. What I did NOT like was my mana dependance.
I created Lagtard, a blood elf rogue after installing TBC. Got him up to 11 (this was going to be a serious alt) but for whatever reason, I lost interest. I WANT to attribute my loss of interest in this character to the blood elf starting area. If I started an undead rogue would I like it more? I dunno for sure, but probably.
I also have a lvl 10 orc hunter, Barrister. No complaints so far, and I like the class. Never seem low on health, and my mana is always solid.
OK - that's out of the way.
It's time to level a second character. My focus will still be on my main, but I can afford to piggyback characters and take more advantage of rest XP. My problem is: I don't know what char I want to create. What I do
not want to do is waste my time. I want to obv. have fun with the new toon I pick, so I'd be a little disappointed to get to 30 and hate my char (like a Warrior that I know who's now 53 and can't wait to be done with this toon and start another one). I've narrowed my choices to the following:
ROGUE, MAGE, or HUNTER.
I'll take them one at a time, giving my thoughts.
HUNTER: Ok ok, hunters = easy mode, but hey, I lvl'd one to 10, and it was genuinely fun. I like having a bow and arrow. lol. My concern is that it's generally agreed that a rogue and/or a mage will out-DPS the hunter, and when it comes to endgame, not only have I heard that hunters were violently nerfed, but if it's between me or (say) a mage, lock, or rogue to run an instance, I think they get the job. I don't like that. (I'm already a Shaman, which is a support class, but I don't want to get into that...)
ROGUE: In comparison to the hunter, it wasn't as fun leveling the rogue.
Will this change, or are the early stages of a rogue kinda I look at all the rogue's abilities, and it seems like it would be so (incredibly) awesome... but even at level 11, (after getting DW, stealth, etc) I lost interest. As I said above, this may be because I didn't like the blood elf story line.
MAGE: This is probably topping my list right now, next to the hunter. Ultimate crowd control, powerful DPS for grouping, I make my own food and water, I can port to cities, etc... but the
absolute killer is the mana dependance. When I play my shammy now, I hate having to stop and drink... so is this something mages learn to live with and move on, or is it something they curse for 70 levels? I'm also not loving the idea of cloth armor, but that wouldn't make me not roll one.
Keep in mind that I have no problem questing on my own (+hunter!), but I will probably be grouping with friends (on their alts) - so it would be nice to actually bring a strong role to the group -> which in my case will be DPS and possibly crowd control. (+rogue, +mage)
What do you guys think? Give me some of your suggestions, comments based on what I wrote, and things you love and hate about your class. If you are a XXXXX and you wish you rolled XXXXX,
please say so and explain why! And if Druids FTW, feel free to convince me.
Also: If anyone is on server Onyxia give me a shout out tonight ingame: Onyxia
